What Goods to be Covered by Carnets

ATA Carnets issued in Hong Kong cover three categories of commodities in general, namely goods for exhibitions, professional equipment and commercial samples. Different countries or customs territories may subscribe to either or all three categories of goods. Below are some common cases showcasing how ATA Carnets could support your needs:

  • Goods for Exhibitions and Trade Shows
  • ATA Carnet saves huge amount of import duties and taxes for temporary importation of high-value goods and advanced technologies, and reduce considerable customs clearance time for bulk items, such as:

    • Jewelleries, watches, glasses and luxury items for business demonstration purposes;
    • Antiques, famous paintings, artwork and articles for the promotion of education, art, crafts, sports, religion;
    • Machinery, apparatus, robotics and advanced technological products for display; and
    • Construction, decoration and advertising materials for exhibitions and events, such as electrical fittings, scenery and other stage properties, sound and image recordings, films and projection equipment, etc.

    In some countries, ATA Carnet is an essential document to simplify the applications for participating in official exhibitions and events.

  • Professional Equipment for Temporary Usages
  • ATA Carnet eases the temporary importation of professional equipment for featuring news and events, organizing concerts, arts performances and sports events, and providing medical, testing and maintenance services. These may include:

    • Filming, broadcasting and other cinematographic equipment for international events and news, ranging from the World Cup and Olympics to editorial interviews and breaking news, through traditional and social media;
    • Musical instruments and props for performing art events, i.e. a concert or drama, or roving performance;
    • Acoustical, diagnostic and telecommunication equipment for erection, testing, commissioning, inspection, control, maintenance or repair of machinery, plant, means of transport; and
    • Equipment, instruments and apparatus necessary for scientists or professionals, e.g. doctors and surgeons, lecturers, geographers, surveyors, etc.

  • Commercial Samples for Business Deals
  • Displaying commercial samples to potential clients is essential when soliciting business deals, especially for specimens during the product development stage. In most cases, it is difficult for the customs authorities to assess the value of new products. ATA Carnets can therefore streamline customs clearance and reduce logistical hurdles of importation, free of duties:

    • Apparel, jewelleries and fashion items for shop displays;
    • New models of electronic products;
    • New designs and innovations for contemplated productions; and
    • Home & lifestyle products (e.g. Eco-living Items);

    HKGCC team provides step-by-step guidance to ensure that your goods and items are properly described for customs purposes throughout the application process.
